As the Lowcountry abounds with fresh vegetables, farmers and consumers meet through farmers markets. The James Island Presbyterian Farmers Market is a project in partnership between churches and small family farmers, originally developed in 1987, designed to create reliable markets for fresh produce and to increase the profits for the farmer by eliminating the middleman.
“Homegrown will improve your local food system through sustainability initiatives, which work to support local farmers and small businesses, reduce waste output, and teach you the benefits of a sustainable life. For some, sustainability is a new trend. For Homegrown, it is the right thing to do.Establishing a connection to Mother Nature, to yourself, and to each other, Homegrown’s mission is to offer the highest quality, least processed, most flavorful and nutritional, fresh foods throughout the Charleston Low Country. Only smart, safe farming practices are allowed here, we promise. You will get to know your farmer.
Homegrown will take a leadership role in the education of practices that attain environmental excellence, and teaching the benefits of making sustainable choices. We will incorporate interactive learning practices for people of all ages, especially children, to be able to implement a “greener” life in your own homes.”
